Speech recognition versus Voice recognition

Informative > Useful Clarifications
Is Voice recognition and Speech recognition the same thing or is there a difference?
Speech Recognition

In speech recognition, spoken words are recorded either with a microphone or with a telephone. The sound is then converted into a series of words that are stored digitally. Each speech recognition program is evaluated based on two factors:

  • Accuracy (percentage error in converting spoken words into digital data)
  • Speed (extent to which the program can keep up with a human speaker)

Speech recognition or speech recognition technology has a long list of applications. Speech recognition software programs are used for general dictation, transcription, hands-free computer telephony, medical transcription, automated customer service, etc.

Voice Recognition exact Voice Verification

The purpose of voice recognition is to identify the person speaking. Therefore, it is better referred to as voice verification or speaker verification.

Voice verification works by scanning those aspects of speech that differ from person to person. Each person has a unique way of speaking. This results from their physiology (shape and size of mouth and throat) and their behavioral patterns (pitch of voice, accent, speaking style, etc.).

Voice verification uses a person's voice to confirm that they are who they say they are. Essentially, a person's voice is used as a unique identifier. A sample of their voice is recorded. Then that person's speech patterns are compared to a database to determine if there is a match between the person's voice and their voice sample.

TalkingID is used in situations where our b2b customers like banks, financial institutions or merchants needs secure authentication of their customers online and offline.
