A SPEECH CONTROLLED
MDA SYSTEM
BASIC AND FUNCTION
The MDA is a small, extremely cost-effective handheld device, in the shape and size of a mobile phone, which can communicate with patients using adapted speech recognition and speech synthesis. The MDA checks the regular intake of important medication at the times specified by the doctor by precise questions. He can recognize and evaluate the patient's answers.
The MDA can read medication boxes using both an RF ID transponder and a barcode. Through his integrated database, the patient can inform the patient of all essential contents of the package insert of the respective medication by means of speech output in up to four target languages.

SYSTEM DESIGN
The MDA system consists of:
- Patient device: voice-controlled device for regulating and tracking medication intake
- Physician and pharmacist device: Docking station for the PC for reading in the medication for the individual patient, including voice input by the doctor / pharmacist (instructions for patients) for reading out the patient input about the medication intake
- Database-based evaluation program for the definition and evaluation of medication intake, as well as additional doctor / pharmacist information
- Database-supported distribution program for the distribution of medication information (data of the package insert) to doctors and pharmacists, as well as distribution of evaluation information at the pharmaceutical company
- The patient device MDA is an embedded single chip solution that consists of a processor with an integrated audio codec, an integrated RF module, scan line, 4 GB NAND memory and a lithium battery. The 4 GB NAND memory contains a database with the package information on around 10,000 medications (in up to four languages if required), the doctor's intake information (timing data and quantities, language information) as well as a control database that records the patient's intake data.
- Communication between the patient device MDA and a connected Windows PC is established with the docking station of the doctor or pharmacist or the pharmaceutical company.
- Relevant data of the doctor or pharmacist are read from the PC-based software into the device database via the HF interface of the docking station, and updates of the MDA drug database are carried out using revision management. At the same time, intake data is read from the device database into the PC-based software of the doctor or pharmacist.
- The database-supported evaluation program on the PC of the doctor or pharmacist visually prepares the patient's MDA intake data into a Microsoft Outlook-style calendar and graphically highlights the patient's incorrect income contrary to the doctor's instructions. It provides the doctor or pharmacist with a graphic mask in which they can enter all times and amounts of a medication.
- The database-supported distribution program of the pharmaceutical manufacturer consists of a powerful server platform. The data in the medication reference database is distributed cyclically in revision management to the systems of the participating doctors and pharmacists via an encrypted Internet connection.
CONCLUSION
For the pharmaceutical company, this means:
Security — The MDA can read and interpret the new RF ID security label on medication boxes as a cost-effective device. The entire chain, from the manufacturer, through distribution and pharmacies, to the patient, is 100% protected against plagiarism. In the project framework, various RF ID labels (costs 1.7ct to 4ct per packaging unit) are tested, protocols and data containers are defined.
Knowledge - the MDA database records centrally statistical methods revenue errors and resulting causalities. Data that can give the manufacturer important indicators for the improvement and distribution of his product.
Flexibility - the MDA is multilingual, trilingual throughout Germany. However, more than 20 languages are possible. Since the system can communicate in all languages with all the information contained in the leaflet contained in the medication box, it is far superior to the pure print medium.
Topicality — the MDA database can be updated at any time Share data about a drug with the patient. So far, this has not been possible with a drug that is already in the supply chain.
Image - Let's look at the age distribution in Germany arrives in 2009, it is noticeable that around 6.45 million Germans over the age of 70 are under constant drug treatment, 1.2 million of these are nursing cases, another 2.2 million can only be treated with the help of third parties (Ms. , Children, family) properly medicate.
Experts speak of the fact that around 40,000 people over the age of 70 die annually in the Federal Republic of Germany if they fail to take a vital medication (beta-blockers, insulin, blood-thinning preparations). In the current demographic situation, the MDA system would be an increase in the safety and quality of life when taking medication for around 4.2 million Germans.
